I have W/, R/, E/, N/ with a total of around 10-12 million exp and they have all completed the 3 chapters. But I just created a Monk a couple of weeks ago and went thru NF first so I could have hero's since groups can be hard to find in the older 2 games. I have noticed that lots of monks run heal/prot builds instead of just one of the other. What is best to run, and keep in mind that so far for me the monk is the most difficult due to having to target allies with the mouse and then use skills with the hand I generally use to move with. (yes I know I can change my setup but then it would throw me off on all my other characters and I play them way more than monk) so that being said I don't want a real complicated build to play if possible. My questions are: What are most important skills to have, (elite and nonelite) and should I go strictly heal, prot, or a combo? I am planning to finish Tyria tonight so will have access to all skills except Factions. I am not 100% sure but think this is the build I have right now: Orizon of healing, words of comfort, Dwayana's kiss, LoD, healing touch, dismiss conditions, holy haste, holy veil. And sometimes I swap out haste and veil for other skills depending on the area I am in and what I am up against.

EDIT: to TRY and avoid flame..I know there are several similar posts on this topic but most of those seem to be people new to the game, not just new to the profession so that is why I made a seperat post and why I listed my EXP in this post. If mods feel it is too close to other threads to warrant being on its own please move to appropriate thread, thanks

As a Monk, I go with healing, unless I go with henchies/heros, then I go offense. I have a Mo/E, but if you just want to practice your monking, then go either prot/heal or total healing, and let the hero go prot. I often will wand a target and keep wanding until the party needs healing.

You can just send your troups to a small mob and let them attack while you take your time getting into the fray (using the flagging technique).

Your statement is a bit odd. You went through NF for your heros, but you don't have all the elites in NF?

Mitigating damage is always the best, hence it is better to remove conditions and hexes, than it is to throw a healing breeze on someone. Samething with using Aegis over Orison of Healing, as reducing damage taken is better than healing on top of it. Also, you'll find OoH is not as good as you might think, please see the thread about OoH.

Most important skills: a hard Rez, removal of conditions/hexes (depends on where you are), some way to heal (1 skill), mittigate damage (RoF).

Most importantly, do not over heal, energy management is not based on a single skill (like Revealed Hex/Glyph of Lesser Energy) or a single attribute (like Soul Reaping), it is about knowing when and how to use your skills effeciently.

LoD or Zelous Benediction are the best two elites IMO.

oops..changed Nightfall to Factions as was originally intended. On a side note, you are in my guild See ya tonight if you are on, I will be trying to finish up in Tyria tonight or at least get to Ring of fire, and I think Mat has a character in southern shiverpeaks that he is going to help me out when I get there

ok tob the build uve posted for ur monk is very nice, very iffesant and quite stong, appirt form orsron. i personaly would swap it out for RoF and words of comfort for sig of devotion/sig of riv. that way u have 2 heals,, kiss and SoD/SoR, one move to limit the damage, RoF, a hex remove and condtion remover and ur enegy maintaing skill, LoD. id use sig nice and early and as much as possible id also preprotect the tank when u sence a big spell about to hit, with its 1/4 cas tand 2 sec recharg eits a very valuble skill.

I prefer to not take hard rez on my monk/hero monk bars and rely on my team to res as necessary. I find taking the time to res someone who has just died often causes the whole party to wipe because you aren't healing.

My favourite mixed heal/prot setup is:

RoF
Dismiss Condition
Dwaynas Kiss
Holy Veil (or Shield of Absorption)
Prot Spirit
WoH (or ZB)
Glyph of Lesser Energy
Aegis or Extinguish

15 Healing 9 Prot 11 Divine (incl. runes)

oops, sry again..we have a monk with a name similar to your guild name and that is what I saw...I will not post his IGN here as I don't know if he would mind/care or not but don't want to risk it..but it is very close to your guild name thanks for tips guys, gonna go home and try some things now during my lunch break

I didn't read what others said but here are my opinions:

Never go pure healing, healing is bad and investing in prot at the same time makes your build more versatile. So far LoD and Healer's boon are about the only viable healing-linked elites, woh used to be good but it's got nothing on LoD/Hb.

Prot, on the other hand, doesn't suck as hard if you go pure prot, still you'd want Gift of health on nearly any prot bar. There are many good prot elites, though some are not so good (amity,life barrier, air of enchantment, mark of protection). My personal favourites are Restore condition and Shield of Deflection.

Important skills to have are glyph of lesser energy if you got some more energy heavy skills or channeling if you got (almost)only 5 energy skills. If you go pvp I'd suggest some self defense skills like Return/Dark escape or Shield bash/Disciplined stance. Hex removal is not quite so important in pve but it won't hurt you to bring some, condition removal is almost a must in any place.

Now depending on which skills you chose, you may have extra room on your bar. For instance, if you bring Restore Condition, Dismiss Condition is not strictly necessary, and could be replaced. Also, if you chose a non-protection elite, that "slot" is opened up. Some good choices for spare slots are:

And if you're playing with a PUG, they may want you to bring a hard rez. Do so if necessary.
